Simple Simon’s, Canterbury
Simple Simon’s, Canterbury, 5th August 2001:
This was Al’s second appearance at Simple Simon’s open mic night (the first was the previous week). Once more using his Atkin acoustic and Dean Markley pick-up, he played three Reaction tunes to an increasingly enthusiastic reception, with the whole thing being captured on tape by Phil. “Jago” is a relatively new instrumental, named after a TV weather girl (don’t ask!). Perhaps too subtle for a pub. This was possibly the first live performance of “Cocoon”, which went down quite well. “What’s Under The Stairs?” is already established as a live favourite and got some very enthusiastic applause.
So overall, a pretty good gig. Al performed very well and eventually managed to win the audience over (never easy when you’re doing acoustic music in pubs). Many thanks are due to Phil Davis for doing the sound, recording the gig and providing a disproportionate amount of applause! More acoustic gigs will almost certainly follow.
Set list:
- Jago (Williams)
- Cocoon (Williams)
- What’s Under The Stairs? (Williams)
