The Smack, Whitstable
The Smack, Whitstable, 7th August 2002:
Strangely, I really wasn’t in the mood, but Adam Rothwell, after Sunday’s success, was mad keen to try another open stage, so I relented. It turned out to be a really good night. Malcolm Moss was down and was his usual er, wayward self. New duo Shonet and Ally appeared with some bongo-pumelling support and impressive vocals (we’re talking LOUD!). “Very good”, I thought quickly followed by, “they’ll probably lynch me!”.
People yelled, whistled, beat the furniture and cheered (someone even called for more!). This much I had not expected, and I’m sure I didn’t imagine it. A result, if somewhat bewildering! Thanks to the Wildebeeste for some sustained conga abuse (and remember, one free drink for original material — much appreciated!).
Set list:
- The Medway Crab Fisherman (Williams)
- Fido, Your Leash Is To Long (The Magnetic Fields)
- Cocoon (Williams)
- What’s Under The Stairs? (Williams)
