Retro Bar, Manchester
Retro Bar, Manchester, 29th September 2002:
Another extravaganza courtesy of the wonderful Stealth Munchkin and their lovely friends, completely exhausting and beset by technical headaches, but hugely enjoyable.
Despite pedals and guitars giving me even more grief than usual, and in spite one or two minor musical cock-ups, we played a well received set. The spirit was indeed there. Tim the drummer was also superb, again.
Safari delivered a pleasingly unhinged set somewhere between Mudhoney and John’s Children (possibly via a large keg of cider), but were possibly a bit too knowing for their own good.
The mighty Stealth Munchkin were on form. Ste managed to avoid braining himself on the low ceiling (but only just) and Sam did a fine job of torturing a horrible strat copy. Sundry Munchkins were also on the wheels of steel between bands playing Beefheart, Pavement, The Pixies, and The Rutles, amongst other things (well, it beats the usual Kylie and Jive Bunny). I even got home in one piece, without getting lost and in time for another gig.
