Simple Simon’s, Canterbury
Simple Simon’s, Canterbury, 30th September 2002:
A solo gig and I managed to wangle my way to the top the bill (out of, er, two). First up was Joe Doe who specialises in a mix of folk, jazz and country-blues on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and banjo. He was pretty damn good, with some nice Slim Harpo and Muddy Waters tunes thrown in for good measure.
I was surviving on caffeine having spent all day on the road (and trying to avoid all the bloody roadworks and diversions, bitch, moan) so I wimped out of playing new songs and stuck to ones I was familiar with, at least in theory. The crowd was, er, modest, and response was the usual mixture of confusion and enthusiasm, plus I got my first ever encore! Mike the landlord hated it, but I’d be doing something wrong if he didn’t.
