The Old Neptune, Whitstable

Our Gigs/Past Gigs

The Old Neptune, Whitstable, 25th January 2004:

It transpired that this was to be the last Neptune open stage for a while, so we tried to make the most of it. We had the “other” Adam; Art Ferguson & Sheila; and a mysterious new guitar player (is his name Bill or did I imagine it?). Lately, we’ve played pretty much all of the open stages as a three-piece: me, Phil and that great chieftain o’ the drinking race, Dave Willoughby. Tired of thrumming an acoustic guitar, I went equipped with the trusty ‘n’ rusty old Sunn Mustang. Phil was rock-solid and Dave was positively inspired. We played the usuals (”Cocoon”, “It’s A Small Town” etc) and some covers — “Folsom Prison Free Jazz” (tempo got a bit lost!) and an epic slow/fast, loud/quiet High Noon. I even attempted some white rap on The Clash’s “Magnificent Seven”, as a medley with “Kinky Afro”. This was all well received, even though I forgot to pretend to be Scottish. The first of these Whatever Sundays in October 2002 seems like a very long time ago. I hope it’s not quite the last one yet. After all, what on earth will I do of a Sunday instead?
